RAIN GALLERY 雫の回廊

Set between forest canopy and streambed, Rain Gallery curates an immersive encounter with Yakushima's landscape and climate. A charred-wood façade and slender steel columns echo the rhythm of the surrounding tree trunks, anchored by a chunky masonry base. Above, a butterfly roof acts as an instrument of rain and light: it gathers water toward a central skylight–drain, where droplets strike a thin film, ripple outward, and slip into rain chains that deliver water into the grey space between rooms. Here, rain becomes the project's spatial organizer—shaping thresholds, tempering air, and making sound and refraction tangible across inside and out. Rustling leaves, the stream below, and raindrops on the roof form a shifting chorus; drifting cloud shadows slide along the long eave and mark time. The house becomes a gallery connecting the mountain and sea by framing changing weather as a daily experience.
