Up Down Space is a public project in Zhangjiang, Shanghai, near a science and technology park. Organized around a hexagonal layout, it aims to create a continuous, engaging environment for different public activities. It includes a large open area for social gathering, a more intimate zone for public art, and a shifting pathway that offers changing views and experiences. Compared with a rectangular plan, the hexagonal geometry provides more flexible routes and multiple axes of movement. A sunken plaza leads into a multi-purpose public space for speeches, street performances, and community events. A separate, quieter area is reserved for art exhibitions. The underground gallery is reached through a glazed-ceiling passage near the exit, bringing daylight in and maintaining a visual connection to the outdoors. After exploring below ground, visitors follow a twisting ramp up to the roof, enjoying panoramic views along the way. The sequence is designed as a continuous journey with new moments throughout.
